Should You Rent or Buy in St. Louis? Here's How to Decide
One of the most common questions I hear from people relocating to St. Louis or preparing to purchase their first home is whether they should continue renting or make the leap into homeownership.
The answer depends on your goals.
Renting offers flexibility.
Buying offers stability and the opportunity to build equity.
In the St. Louis area, housing affordability remains significantly stronger than many larger metropolitan markets. This often allows buyers to become homeowners sooner than they expected.
When evaluating whether to rent or buy, I encourage clients to ask:
• How long do I plan to stay?
• Do I want stability in my housing costs?
• Am I financially prepared?
• How important is flexibility?
Many renters are surprised to learn their monthly payment could be similar to what they're already paying in rent.
The biggest difference is that homeowners are building equity over time rather than helping a landlord build it.
That doesn't mean buying is always the right answer.
If someone expects to relocate in the near future or isn't financially ready, renting may make more sense.
The key is making a decision based on your situation—not someone else's.
