What Buyers Really Mean When They Say “Move-In Ready”
“Move-in ready” is one of the most commonly used phrases in real estate — but it means different things to different buyers.
In the St. Louis real estate market, understanding what buyers expect when they see this term can make a big difference for sellers.
From my experience as a top St. Louis real estate agent, most buyers define move-in ready as:
- Clean and well-maintained
- Major systems in good working order (HVAC, roof, plumbing)
- Neutral paint and updated finishes
- Little to no immediate repairs needed
It does not necessarily mean fully renovated or brand new. In fact, many buyers are perfectly comfortable making cosmetic updates over time — they just don’t want to feel overwhelmed right after moving in.
For sellers, this is important because small improvements can go a long way:
- Fresh paint
- Updated lighting
- Minor repairs
- Deep cleaning
These relatively simple updates can dramatically change how buyers perceive the home.
In St. Louis and surrounding areas, where buyers are often comparing multiple homes within the same price range, presentation can be the deciding factor.
When I work with sellers, I help them identify exactly which updates will give them the best return — not just what looks nice, but what actually matters to buyers.
If you’re preparing to sell and wondering whether your home will be considered move-in ready, I’d be happy to walk through it with you and create a plan.
